Hints & Tips for Packing your Storage Container

Prepare by getting hold of some sturdy boxes and bubble wrap or newspapers for wrapping fragile items, mark these boxes as fragile. If storing clothes then wardrobe boxes are handy, or consider vacuum packing clothes, bedding & towels, this packs them down to a manageable size.
Don’t make boxes too heavy and difficult to lift and fill any gaps with packaging materials to prevent boxes collapsing when stacked.
Pack what you use the least, or are least likely to want first, and leave the items you may need or use more regularly at the front, closer to the doors.
Label your boxes – write a list of the items you put in them. It will help you to not only find them in your unit, but also to unpack them.
Try not stack anything directly against the walls and think about leaving gaps between items to allow air to circulate.
Make sure if you stack upwards, that the items at the bottom at sturdy and strong enough. Cardboard boxes can soften and lose their strength over time, so something that looks sturdy enough when you pack the unit, may not be in a month or years’ time.
Make sure that everything going into your container is dry otherwise moisture could get trapped inside and cause condensation. This means that you should make sure you defrost your fridges & freezers and dry them out before packing them away. Leave their doors open to allow ventilation. Avoiding anything getting wet is not always easy in our climate so if you are concerned think about putting a moisture trap inside. You can buy these very cheaply in discount stores or we have commercial ones available to purchase.
Soft furnishings, such as sofas and mattresses should be wrapped in protective covers to keep them clean and free from dust.
